Imagine a world without power….
Not sure how the writers will do with the new show, Revolution.
I must say it has sparked some though in me. The “train” has been fueled, coal tossed in the “engine”, and ideas are rolling down the tracks.
What would this world be like?
On Revolution, “the show”, juice, or power had all stopped before the first commercial and came back to a different world 15 years later.
What about a world vacated by ALL forms of power?
Let’s start with what is GONE:
- · Cars: even if there is a model T out there, batteries don’t even work
- · Trains, buses…… Planes fell from the sky on Revolution…… all left like relics of a forgotten world.
- · Clocks: not even battery operated, wind-up, etc………. Perhaps we need to break out a sun dial. Do you know how?
- · Computers? Say good bye to Twitter, Facebook, Google, Wikipedia, X-Box, Downloads??? Ha… CDs, 33 LPs not even a ole 45 is playable. Live bands is about it for music.
- · Word Perfect????? Hell, remember the electric typewriter? Do they even make ribbon for the old fashion Hammond 1 now? Doubt they will be able to in a future without power. Put pen to paper… what is left of the pens floating out there.
I Googled the information about the old fashion typewriters while musing on this subject at work. What if this happened just as suddenly as it did on the show? What if it was a “Sudden Loss”, a “sudden shock of the system”? Not only could you not ask for an antique on E-Bay or the Antique Roadshow, you would have to go the public library just to look up what to look for.
Your head spinning yet????
- · Information??? Among the things gone…. TV, Radio, CB… US Postal Service. May need to re-invent the Pony Express
Truthfully if you survived that first initial shock, not knowing what happened? Your first thoughts would be, well we just wait for National Grid to show up and fix a transformer. But how long do you wait? After days, weeks, months, years, before you move on with your life? How many will simply die from the system shell shock.
Going anywhere may be a quest in of itself.
- · Safety??? Gone ….. Police, Governmental Military, Government itself falls….
- · World Community???? Not even national community will be around…… Militias and gangs will rise.
Living in the cities got you killed. As the show put it, when it came back from the 1st commercial, “If you were smart, you moved out of the cities”. Power plays will forge a new “old” society.
Trekking to the library for information on a typewriter? That is if you are lucky enough to have been in the safely of your home when the “juice” went out. What if you were at work? What if you were in transit? Hope you were not on a plane? Separated from all your family and friends, alone…………………
………….. forget about thinking on next month or next week, the first hour of your new life will be rough, hazardous, or your last minutes on what is left of this Earth addicted to power.
The loss of power will mean the loss of things you never considered over the all important task of trying to fling that yellow Angry Bird at a wall of blocks to kill a green bugger egg with the iPod in the palm of your hand. For you that simple joy is power. It is that all consuming need to fill every space of time with meaningless tasks.
What if all you have left is time and waiting for
Panic set in yet???????????????
Let’s go back to POWER.
Yes we have power in the palm of our hands. And don’t think I am some nut-ball who wants to go back to the wilderness. Yes I am a tree huggin LIBERAL…. And proud of that!
But I like toilet paper….. Yup that is gone too folks…. Well maybe not initially, but it will run out…. Then what? One character in this show said he longed for Charmin…. I would settle for store brand. Might as well wipe yer arse on the green backs in your wallet.
Oh wait, Dragon…. Ya may have forgot to mention something about the loss of power in this television plot.
No one knows why it is gone, but IT IS NEVER COMING BACK. That is what is yelled out in the opening scene as a man is franticly downloading something onto what looks like a thumb drive. It no sooner says “download complete” on the computer screen then the shit hits the fan… and the fan stops running. The man pushes the thumb drive into an odd shaped locket on a rope necklace.
Hummmmmm so this powerless scenario was planned.
Back to my musings…….
Truthfully when I stop to think about the changes I have witnessed in my journey from age 13 (1980) to 45 (2012), I am awe-inspired by the amount of power a child can hold in the palm of his OR HER hand…. And the knowledge that goes with it.
With this power we have abandoned many “things” that are of no use to us. I had to look up the “Hammond 1”, because when I 1st attended my freshmen year in college, it was a big deal to get the Brother Electric typewriter. I went to school with the latest typewriter, a soft cover dictionary, soft cover Thesaurus, and a few bottles of white out. Word Perfect and design software were coming of age before I graduated in ’93. The Intranet exploded after. Just the last 15 years has been a virtual turn of not only the new century, but a new way of seeking information.
With the knowledge my generation and the ones before me forged to feed those who were born at the dawn of the Internet, we also abandoned the basic skills our grandparents and their grandparents lived every day.
We not only forgot the Hammond 1, we forgot what it took to get to that.
Do we know how to make toilet paper? Truthfully if you look at the average person, they don’t know who the VP of the United States is. (Ever watch Jay Walking on The Late Show with Jay Leno).
Shell Shock will no doubt alter the course of humanity.
I can understand, somewhat, why a simple television show skips 15 years ahead to what may be no doubt a formula family drama. It will no doubt concentrate on the basic family – individual structure/struggle. A soap opera. Entertainment? The quiet irony will be that all of this is watched on a wide-screen, in high definition, and saved on a DVR brought in by Time Warner cable.
I caught a few minutes of the premier on Facebook and then through ON DEMAND cable.
Seriously….. LOL =)
…… Wonder where those terms and emoticons will be 15 years sans JUICE.
Remember “cool” and “groovy”? Do you see a kid in high school today with their pants down to their knees texting the word “groovy”? Nope
- · So in a world without texting, just how long does ROTFL last?
- · Where would not only world communication, but education be?
We did not just discard the Hammond 1 or knowledge, but imagination. Much is feed to us. You ever watch someone texting and walking…. Sometimes you have to guide someone to keep them from getting hit by a car walking across the street. People can’t pull themselves away from their cell phones even with the threat of brain cancer dangled in front of their eyes in quick bleeps of news flashed on TV.
This is not the first time the thought of the world losing POWER has come along.
I remember holding a soft cover edition of a book called The Stand, by Stephen King. Oh the movie was fine, but what King wrote in detail can push that train of thought right over a cliff. This was not just the loss of JUICE, but the loss of population driven by a world trying to first survive THE PLAGUE. The juice only went out because people abandoned it. King explored basic societal structure.
- · Two people stuck together, not only survive, but can fall in love.
- · Three people created the triangle issues, including jealousy.
- · 6 created groups and can even rediscover prejudice.
Of course all this is based on the character of the individual. The alpha and the beta personalities.
The characters in The Stand trekked the country to Boulder, Colorado to “make the stand against evil”. In Vegas of all places. But they made their quest in cars and motorcycles.
Them be gone in Revolution world…. No Juice…. at all… and it is not coming back.
Before reading The Stand, I read another soft cover called “The Mirror”. In this book, a young woman, on the eve of her wedding to a man she “sorta” loves, touches a mirror that had been in her family for decades while her grandmother suddenly comes back from a stroke to also touch the mirror. She is instantly transported into her grandmother’s body, on the eve of her arranged wedding,,,,, when she was 20. So she not only switch bodies, but skipped back in time.
I will spare you the mind fuck of anticipating giving birth to your own mother, not to mention “fucking” your grandfather….. and just say that both these women experienced the shell shock of extreme societal change.
These were women…..
Shay was transported from 1979 (that is a trip back for us folks) to her grandma Brandy at the turn of the century. Before the 18th Amendment.
She had to cook from a stove that required wood to fuel, carry water from a well, pee in a bucket, and empty said bucket the next day. She had to clean dishes and clothes with soap she shaved from a hard bar, probably bought from the local store. She had to ride in a buckboard, driven by her “stranger” arranged husband in a dress that rivals a burka.
Ladies these were the days of no birth control, no abortions (not safe ones), no feminine napkins, no tampons. No rights. You want to shave your legs… you had to fight your husband for the blade by the leather strap… and he could legally take that strap and whip you.
Where would this “Revolution” world take us?
Gone is Government. Say what you want about it, there is a safety net for the powerless. And there it is folks…..
….. something I don’t think this formula family show will explore the true depth to the loss of power.
As the one main ingénue said in a preview “when the world lost its power, I found mine”
You think that could be true? For a girl – child?
As I said before this train of thought skidded several tracks…..
World and National community is gone with the loss of power. This young lady grew up in a world sans MTV, Vogue, Teen Beat, Christina Aguilera,. She grows up in a world where her protection and her female role models are in the circle of her community.
Gone are the structural safety nets we formed in our powered society where collective thoughts travel at the speed of sound. At the speed in which you could send a tweet from an Egyptian power struggle to American Media.
- · Gay marriage?
- · Women’s rights?
- · Racism?
What would be the religion de jour?
Freedom of Speech??? Our collective wills, collective thoughts formed the Constitution, Bill of Rights, Amendments.
With the loss of power may come the grateful relief from credit card debt (this shit is all in computers), but also the loss of security.
No Government, no police….. Militias and gangs who claim power though power plays. That alone will be a task of survival. They will begin taking over communities… they will demand tax.
Well per this TV show, gone is also the 2ndAmendment. The militia that took over this “territory” rides into the town “a former cul-de-sac” on horses with guns, demanding the taking of a man. They want to “question” him about another man. When one of the townsmen displays a rifle, he is told it is a hanging offense. “So go hang yourself he says back”.
Gone is any legal help.
Gone is everything so many fought and bleed for…..
But they did it…. They gave that to us with their lives.
What would you do if this actually came to pass? What if in a split second all the “things” you clung to in fraudulent importance were useless and all you have left is your will?
Would you give it up to “survive”?
Would you give up the rights you hold dear or fight to maintain them, even when the fight may be futile?
If you would fight with all that subsidized power gone, why would you not when we have all these resources in the palm of our hands now?
Perhaps it is time to get to work…………..
