Ok, after watching American Idol this year, I find myself frustrated with singers coming onto the scene with the ability to create one outstanding song compiled with several mediocre songs.

Can anyone out there name several albums (yes I am that old to remember the 33's) that they just plain wore out and had to get them on CD's and still wore those out as well?

Here are a few of mine:

1. Songs in the Key of Live: Stevie Wonder

2. Days and Nights of Future Past: Moody Blues

3. Jesus Christ Superstar

4. Tracey Chapman: Self titled debut

5. Melissa Ethridge: Self titled debut

6. Ten: Pearl Jam

7. Misunderstood: Pink

8. Johnny Lang: Lie to Me

9. Jeniffer Hudson: Self titled debut

10. Supernatural: Santana

As you can tell I have an eclectic taste....

To be honest the list can change with my mood.... Stevie will always be #1

So lets here some of yours.......

Agreed with:

#1, #4, #10, #9, #3 (can't believe I left that one out or their Greatest Hits ... with the scull on it)

for Def Leppard I would go with Hysteria.... but Pyromania is cool

Yes, a much better graphic than their silly vinyl cover for GH #2. Yes, damn it, you're right. I got them backwards. Sheesh, you'd think the memory of the 2nd CD I ever bought would stick with me.

Tough to put just 10 on a list, and even harder to say that one is better than the other, but Green Day's American Idiot is my favorite of all time, so here goes:

1 - Green Day - American Idiot

2 - Ramones - Mania

3 - X - Los Angeles

4 - Smiths - Louder than Bombs

5 - Sublime - Sublime

6 - Beatles - Abbey Road

7 - Pretenders - The Singles

8 - Bob Marley - Legend

9 - Carole King - Tapestry

10 - Elton John - Tumbleweed Connection

But I reserve the right for one honorable mention:

11 - Jimmy Buffet. Love his music in general, but I don't think he ever really made one great album. Seems to me there is at least one "less than perfect" song on each album, sort of filler material.

Ah, since you've expanded it I can now add a few...hundred. ;)

Judas Priest - British Steel

Elton John - 11-17-70 through Goodbye Yellow Brick Road

Billy Joel - An Innocent Man

The Beatles - The White Album & Abbey Road

Bruce Springsteen - Born in The USA

Megadeth - Capital Punishment

John Lennon - Double Fantasy (we lost him too young)

GNR = Appetite for Destruction

The Police - Synchronicity

Still way too many more. Like you I have way too many CDs, although I have moved away to digital purchases with redundant backup. Good posting. :)

Guns N Roses!!!! oh yeah I remember that one and Bon Jovi "Slippery When Wet" around the same time.

Billy Joel is another one you could just put on and let the whole album play.

That's a tough one...I mean, to pick the best ten, when I've been listening to music fairly closely for over 40 years, but here goes:

1. Made In Japan, Deep Purple (best live album ever)

2. Cosmos Factory, CCR (I love IHITTGV)

3. On Stage, Rainbow (with my all-time favorite song, Catch the Rainbow)

4. Still Got The Blues, Gary Moore (great, unheralded guitarist)

5. FM Live, Climax Blues Band (best party tune of all time: Goin' To New York)

6. Bridge Of Sighs, Robin Trower (Too Rolling Stoned...great tune!)

7. Secret Treaties, Blue Oyster Cult (those guys are still doing concerts!)

8. The Best Of Foghat, Foghat (filled with great tunes, from Slow Ride to Stone Blue)

9. Get Your Wings, Aerosmith (for just one song: Train Kept A Rollin'!)

10. Tie, Past, Present, And Future, and Modern Times, both Al Stewart (because I can't choose between them)

There it is. Pretty challenging to get the best ten...and I obviously missed a few! Thanks for this thread!

I see a fair number of people naming The Beatles in there somewhere.

Fine. Check this out: Did you know there is one public domain live recording of the Fab Four out there that is so good you won't believe your ears?

Oh, yes...and if you are a Beatle fan, you have to hear it. They recorded a four-song set for Swedish radio in front of a small, polite audience a couple of months before they went to America. The lineup: 'I Saw Her Standing There', 'Money', 'You Really Got a Hold on Me' (cover of Smokey Robinson) and 'Roll Over Beethoven'.

            Beatles Live on Swedish Radio

Hope that link works. I haven't put up a new podcast in a while. (laughs)

I love Pink Floyd...The Wall but you know most of their albums seem like remakes. Don't matter much, because it fits in with what I have put this out for. You can put the CD or album on and just go with it. No need for a song here and there and mixing tapes and such.

sorry ... I couldn't resist <grin>. 'Sign' was released in 1987. The controversial name change (to what eventually became known as the Love Symbol) came about in 1993, during negotiations related to the release of his 17th album, 'The Gold Experience' (released in 1995).

            ATB,

I struggle with Portishead's Dummy. It's truly brilliant, and a landmark trip-hop album. But, on one day it can take me down emotionally to an uncomfortable point, and then a month later I think to myself it's the most brilliant and beautiful recording ever.

Actually I am regretting making it only 10.... I have a CD rack that is 6' and spins with 4 sides.... and it is full. I lost count of how many are there.

            My range is quite eclectic.... country(Reba/Kenny Rogers/McBride), blues (love Muddy Waters/Diana Washington), Rock (Metalica/AC-DC/Pink Floyd....), 70's, 80's, 90's, 00'

            So let'r rip....

It's tough, really, to mention something like B-Tribe's (Barcelona Tribe of Soulsters) "Fiesta Fatale" in a list with Elton John and Green Day!

I'll stop with my 11 for now...cause I could probably list a top 100 favorites.

            3. Pixies - Doolittle

            8. Rasputina - How We Quit the Forest

            9. Tina Turner - Private Dancer

Jace, I love Exile in Guyville.

There is a song called "**** and Run", and I can't understand the all of the lyrics in the bridge. Is she singing, "unfettered and sofas" or "unbuttered and sodas", or what? I've wondered for years and years and would appreciate your help!

I like Mitchell's Miles of Aisles, but prefer Court and Spark, and I feel like "Hissing of Summer Lawns" is way under-rated.

F*** and Run is my favorite Liz Phair song. She's saying "letters and sodas", the kinds of "stupid old @!$%#" that she wants out of a relationship. Love letters and malt shop kinda stuff.

Also, Court and Spark is great, too. I think I prefer Miles of Aisles because I got an old copy of it on vinyl when I was in high school and it was my first exposure to Joni Mitchell. Sentimental factor, plus it has a lot of her greatest hits on it.

Jace, yep, **** and Run is the best song on the album, but the entire album is great!

Thanks for the answer! So, she is saying she is tired/bored "of letters and sodas." I thought she might be saying "sodas", but I was hearing "unfettered" instead of "of letters" I guess.

Yes, I remember those high school vinyls. I received a copy of the BeeGees Trafalgar one year, and although I don't have the vinyl anymore, I have the CD and I love it. It's trash, I know, but I love it.

Actually, she's saying that what she WANTS from a relationship is "all that stupid old @!$%#" (ie, love letters and 2 straws in 1 soda). She wants a guy to woo her. But instead, all she gets is F*** and Run, time and again.

Love "For all the wrong reasons" probably the best of the 4 I got the latest one is ok.

Some of Brooks' work grated my nerves at first, and then I got to listening to her. Most of it was very relevant to my day-to-day get'r'dones, so I took to it after that.

I've seen lots of concerts, but missed out on Skid Row. I've worn them out several times. I should have remembered to include Blackfoot---Train, Train in that list, but I forgot.

For me, it definitely depends on my mood. I never know the names of the songs but I will list my favorite artists.

                1. Billy Joel

                2. George Strait

                3. Jason Mraz

                4. Bee Gee's

                5. Nickelback

                6. Stevie Wonder

                7. Eric Clapton

                8. Finger 11

                9. AC/DC

                10. Whatever the most popular pop song of the week is. I always seem to like them for about a month and then it's over.

                Chicago

Didn't Billy Joel have a song with that title also or is it Always a Woman? I think it's Always a Woman. Anyway, I love it too! I love the piano. Everything Billy Joel does is awesome but I actually KNOW some of the titles:

                Always a Woman?

                Piano Man

                Shameless

                You May be Right

Only the Good Die Young (whew!)

                River of Dreams

what's the name of the one that goes....

Whoo oooo ooo ooo for the longest tiiiiimeee? Is it called The Longest Time? I think so. I love that song too!

mad, you sure do know your music!

I have worn out more than on cassette of that album.

                not over it,

I'm a bit of a music aficionado. I have 6000 songs on my hard drive, was raised with it (my father sang with Dion & The Belmonts way back when in NYC) and have an incredible memory for it as well. Thanks for the compliment.

At work we play the "Who sings it" game. You are not allowed to ask unless you know the answer. I bet you would kick our butt's. I am not that good but I am getting better. We listen to a station that plays all 70's, 80's and a little bit of current music. I had no idea how many Journey songs there were!

I've been a member of several forums, chat channels, rooms, etc over the years (and at work) and I was always the go to guy for music. In one IRC channel we would play a variation on that game by typing in one part of a line of lyrics and folks guessing. Some of it is because I love obscure facts and really odd bits of news concerning music. Don't know them all, but every piece I pick up stays forever, or until I lose my mind as I age. :)

By the way, I apologize. It's Your Love, which I know, but I didn't hit the key hard enough. Broke my own rule about proof reading as spell check won't catch a misspelled word that is a genuine word. Sorry.

You should try to get on one of those game shows like "Don't Forget the Lyrics", you could be rich!

I remember it! I just saw the video for "All The Love In The World" on VH1 last weekend!

That's funny. My 10 year old son watches their video's on You Tube all the time. I am afraid I am contaminating my poor kids. My 13 year old sings Billy Joel songs at Karaoke. People always look at him twice...he sings Piano Man like a pro.

I think I was reading that you are a Tool fan, right? My 10 year old also like Tool. He is the weirdest kid I have ever met, in a good way. He absolutely loves every kind of music, even show tunes.

Peter Frampton Comes Alive is great! That 2 album set is just marvelous. Buddy Miles Live (Down By The River) is another great one. Did anyone mention: BeeGees---Spirits Having Flown? Yall are causing me to go through all the dust accumulated in my small closet to listen to my "albums" all over again. I love music of all kind.

LMAO =} You go right ahead... see I need help remembering album names.

Thanks for the ELO reminder. I remember a record that had a little pop up of a space ship. It was blue.

Back in those days our house was filled with:

                  • Songs in the key of Life
                  • Fampton comes alive
                  • Electric Light Orchestra
                  • Man a la Mancha
                  • Kiss (can't remember the name)
                  • Eagles (Hotel California and the Greatest Hits)
                  • Cher's Greatest Hits
                  • Jesus Christ Superstar (seriously folks it is sick that i know every musical note of this)

I mean the TV was never on... You did not have to mess around with taping cassets, or mixing CD's... and an MP3 player was just a dream..... Lord have mercey we had 8tracks.... I had one of Saun Cassidy.

                  Oh that reminds me...

                  Saun Cassidy... Room Service.

Ha... I would put on little plays, especially when I went to visit my father, I wanted to play Judas ( and I am a 90 % white woman), Christ, Mary, and Pilot.

If I was not putting on this child like production... it would be Grease....

and I was both Rizzo and Sandy.... ok and sometimes Danny.

I think I had an identity crisis.

OK! All above, check this out: I was born in 1949(60 next month .......Yes! That's what I said). Anyway, as a teenager everyone where I lived was only listening to a black radio station. I was listening to other stations that played: Rolling Stones, Paul Revere & The Raiders, The Beatles, Jan & Dean, Paul Anka, Four Seasons, Helen Reddy, ELO, Frankie Avalon; etc: I would be jumping in my bed with a broom playing the guitar because I loved the guitar in all the Beatles & Paul Revere songs. My parents(that's 2 peoples!) would ask me, "What is yo problem!" I'd answer, "I do not have a problem, I just love Rock 'n' Roll!! For the longest they felt I was a strange kid; but no matter, I had my own little transistor radio and I was in Four Seasons heaven. Believe me, I still play my broom stick guitar, I just don't play it on my bed; however I have added shades. I gave myself so many nick-names, I do not remember not one. :))

I have seen Tool live, first on 10/24/2006 (three weeks after Aenima's release) and around 13-15 times since. I think the wife and I are going to check them out at the All Points West festival in NYC this September, but we will also see them when they hit my neighborhood. Maybe I'll see you there.

When I was 16, I wore out my Vol. 4 cassette by consistently rewinding and replaying "St. Vitus Dance" on my way to school. It was the heaviest song I'd ever heard and I loved freaking out all the square kids as I pulled into the parking lot. I didn't realize until I replaced all my Sabbath with CDs that I'd actually warped the tape so much that it was playing at like 2/3 speed (and somedays I wish I still had the "slow" version). Good times.

I could list more, but it would take up too much space. It was cool reading about what other albums people like. I saw many, many favorites on the lists! I'm going to have to download some stuff now.....

Did Steely Dan make 'Hey Nineteen? Also did James Taylor make 'Cats In the Cradle'?

Cats is a beautiful song. I apologize for my enthusiasm; its just that this seed is bringing back sooo many great memories. I feel like I am actually at a concert. By the way, someone above stated they went to a Queens concert. I envy you...I never got to see them in concert. By the time I realized I loved the group, the lead singer had passed away. That is one concert I truly regret missing.

"Cats in the Cradle"was Harry Chapin's original, but I dont know if Taylor ever covered it.

Did you know JT did the backup vocals and played banjo on Neil Young's "Old Man"?
